The garden's founder Ruth Bancroft Peterson was born in Berkeley, California. She went to the University of California, Berkeley, and majored in architecture. While in college, the stock market crashed, so she decided to switch her major to teaching. A blind date led her to meet Philip Bancroft, Jr., who would eventually become the Executive Director. In 1941, they married and moved to the family farm in Walnut Creek.
